Dental Cleaning (Prophylaxis)

Professional dental cleaning is important no matter how thorough you are in caring for you teeth.

What is a Prophylaxis?

A prophylaxis is a procedure which is carried out to prevent negative health conditions. In the case of dentistry, a prophylaxis is a thorough dental cleaning procedure to remove bacteria known as plaque from the teeth and gum areas to reduce the risk of cavities and gum diseases.

I Brush and Floss Twice a Day, is Dental Cleaning Necessary?

Professional dental cleaning is necessary because although you may practice thorough dental hygiene, plaque and tartar still build up on your teeth and around gums. It is important to remove the bacteria to reduce the risk of developing cavities or gum disease. Dental cleanings also allow your dentist to evaluate your overall oral health by seeing if your gums bleed, or new cavities have formed.

How Often Should I See My Dentist for Dental Cleaning?

Every dentist will recommend their patients to come for a dental cleaning every six months if their gums are in good health. More frequent visits may be necessary up to every three months along with special care in between visits if there is excessive bleeding of the gums during a cleaning procedure.

Is Dental Cleaning Painful?

Dental cleaning procedures will be absolutely painless if your teeth and gums are in good health.
